St Austell is proving to be a Cornish powerhouse for developing football coaches.

Four Sports Students from Cornwall College St Austell have successfully completed their FA Level 1 Football Coaching Award, funded by Cornwall Sports Partnership Activators scheme.

The scheme rewards learners with £100 off a National governing body coaching qualification if they have contributed to college-based, community and school sport by leading or coaching a minimum of 30 hours.

Team Lead for Sport, Mark Ferguson-Smith said: “These sports students are the epitome of what we are aiming to develop at St Austell campus. They have the determination and commitment to coach and develop young people in sport and have clear aspirations to progress onto university and further into careers in sports coaching and PE teaching.”

Students Saul Niles, Jack Williams, Connor Blowes and Ollie Burt have been busy supporting with sports events in the local community run by the Mid-Cornwall Sports Network, based at Poltair School.

Jack, Ollie and Connor all agreed it was a great “stepping stone” onto their next qualifications. Ollie added; “I see this qualification as another skill to add to my CV, which will help with my future career as I want to be a PE teacher.”

They completed a 12-hour football marathon to raise money for a screening to be held at the College for Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY). They also completed work experience placements at Roche, Sandy Hill, Tywardreath and Biscovey Schools, by coaching, leading and officiating primary school football.

Jack Walker, Sandy Hill Academy PE Coordinator and Teacher said: “Connor and Jack have been invaluable to our school sport this year, they have coached our County Shield winning football teams and officiated a number of our games. They have also supported with PE and classroom lessons, experiences which I’m certain will be as valuable to them in the future as they have been to our school!”

Mark added; “We are extremely proud of the contributions they have made and will continue to make enhanced by the collection of qualifications that they have achieved during their time with the Cornwall College, St Austell sports department.”
