A local student has been successful in gaining a work placement at Pentillie Castle near St Mellion.

Foundation Learning student, Max Harmer, at Duchy College has been working at Pentillie Castle as part of the Pathway to Employment Stage 2 Study Programme, which specialises in supporting young people with additional learning needs to develop their understanding of employability and experience real work environments.

Max has been working with the grounds team to support them to maintain the impressive 55 acres of woodland gardens.

“I really enjoy working at Pentillie, it is a great place to work,” Max said.

He is supported by his Job Coach who supports him to develop his independent working skills and who works with the team at Pentillie to withdraw support, enabling him to eventually work independently.

Owner of Pentillie, Sarah Coryton, said they are “thrilled to have Max on a Monday when he comes in with his Job Coach.”

“He is a joy and full of smiles and good humour. He works so hard whether rain or shine. The support he receives from his Job Coach is fantastic.”

Pathway to Employment Coordinator at Duchy College, Matthew White, said he is “proud to see Max developing his independent working skills.”

“The progress he has made since September is fantastic. Our new partnership with Pentillie Castle has enabled him to develop his work-based knowledge at college and put this into practice in a real work environment.

“I’m looking forward to seeing Max’s continued progression throughout the course of this year to prepare him for employment within the horticultural and grounds maintenance sector.”
