Equine students from the South West have enjoyed meeting some of their eventing heroes, including Olympic Gold medallist, Sir Mark Todd.

The Duchy College visited one of the country’s leading competition and schooling venues, Pontispool in Somerset, where they had the opportunity to watch international riders competing in the disciplines of dressage and show jumping.

Pontispool is a professional and innovative equine sports centre which caters for all levels of horsemanship across the various equestrian disciplines.

Student, Katie Gabriel, who had never been to a competition before, said “it was amazing and I now really want to work as a competition groom”.

A few students were also lucky enough to meet Olympic gold medallist, Sir Mark Todd. Mark is a pioneer of three-day eventing in New Zealand and as part of New Zealand’s first three-day eventing team to contest a world championship he was able to give the students some helpful advice about competing in this event.

Course Manager, Louise Garland, said it was great to be able to give the students this type of opportunity.

“It’s not every day they get to see this level of competition and these types of facilities,” she continued.

“It is important to their future career plans as it really opens up the options available for them.”
