Two local catering students are celebrating after winning medals at the Major Series International Final, an international cooking competition.

Held as part of the annual Hotelympia event at the Excel Centre in London, Professional Cookery students from Cornwall College Saltash, Charlie Walter and Chloe Spear both triumphed, coming away with a bronze medal each.

Former Liskeard Community College student Charlie Walters, 17, who is studying Level 3 Professional Cookery at Cornwall College Saltash, said he is really “proud of what he has achieved”.

“Competing in national competitions such as this whilst studying at College is amazing,” he continued.

“It is a great course here, because we are such a tight knit college everyone knows each other and the support we get from lecturers is fantastic.”

Student, Chloe Spear, 17, who was previously a student at Combe Dean School and is now studying Level 3 Professional Cookery at Cornwall College Saltash, said she is “over the moon to come away with a bronze”.

“The competition was absolutely fantastic, all the judges were really friendly. Been in the final was really daunting but there was so much positive adrenalin between all the competitors,” Chloe explained.

“I had to make two dishes of two portions each. I made a chicken breast stuffed with red pepper, sausage meat fast wrapped in pancetta with a mushroom risotto, celeriac cubes, braised leeks and gnocci mushrooms. For the second part we had to make a broth; I made a beef consume with stir fry veg, noodles and a rare sirloin steak.”

“I was so pleased so be awarded a bronze. I love the course at Cornwall College Saltash; to get these experiences whilst on the course is so valuable. The lecturers are an amazing support.”

Development Chef and competition organiser, Wayne Harris, said he was “very impressed by the commitment, dedication and passion shown by Charlie and Chloe on the day.”

“To achieve a medal at this competition is a great honour and they should be proud of what they have achieved. To showcase their talents at one of the biggest hospitality competitions in the country is a tremendous achievement and I said to both on the day that if I had half as much talent at their age as they do I would be very pleased.”

“I know they will keep getting stronger with each competition they do.”

Team Lead for Professional Cookery at Cornwall College Saltash, Chris Penk, said it was “amazing to see our young chefs competing on a national level”.

“After achieving gold in the regional finals, beating competition in the South West, achieving bronze in their first national competition shows the standards that are been achieved at Cornwall College.”

“The professionalism and dedication showed by our learners competing was matched by our learners who travelled to support,” Chris continued.

“All in all it was a real team effort that shows why Cornwall College really is the best catering college in the South West.”
