Cookery students savour Flavour Fest challenge

Students rose to the challenge of helping deliver Plymouth’s Flavour Fest’s magnificent array of cookery demonstrations at the weekend.

The largest free food and drink celebration in the South West was busy with those looking for inspiration and the chance to taste lots of delicious samples.

Stand sponsors and event partners Cornwall College Saltash provided staff and students from to help with the cookery demonstrations on the main stage, alongside some of the top names in the business.

Former Combe Dean student Chloe Spear, who is studying Level 3 Professional Cookery at Cornwall College Saltash, said it was a “fantastic experience” to work on stage with chefs including John Torode, The Tanner Brothers and Jacques Marchal.

“We are so lucky on the course to have the opportunity to make these contacts in industry,” Chloe continued.

“This was my second year working at Flavour Fest and it was also great to see what happens behind the scenes and not just on the stage.

“I would definitely recommend the Professional Cookery course to other students, the experience we get stands us in such good stead to start a successful career.”

The College holds a Gold Accreditation, 3 Centre’s of Excellence and an AA Highly Recommended College Rosette, making it only one of two colleges in the UK to hold such status.

Managing Director at Lawsons, Liz Lawson, said working with Cornwall College Saltash at Flavour Fest “shows me that the College put the students at the heart of everything they do.”

“The students were fantastic and are encouraged and mentored all along the way,” she continued.

“They worked tremendously hard and were rewarded by meeting the chefs demonstrating at the event. They really are a credit to the College.”

Team Lead for Professional Cookery at Cornwall College Saltash, Chris Penk, said Flavour Fest “is a high profile event that allows our students to showcase their skills to lots of people.”

“It is the perfect opportunity for us to promote the opportunities we have for anyone interested in Catering or Hospitality,” Chris continued.

“Our awards are a true recognition of what we stand for when it comes to education, industry links and employability skills.”
