Falmouth Marine School Falmouth LEVEL: 5 Marine & Natural Environment

Located in one of the most beautiful coastal regions of the UK, this Falmouth-based programme provides a proven track record of success in developing the academic potential of students, which enables them to progress on to some of the most prestigious marine-based academic institutions in the world, or obtain employment within this expanding and exciting career path.

The newly constructed and equipped campus provides an almost unprecedented level of access to the diverse marine ecosystems of the South West peninsula. With subjects ranging from pelagic and benthic biology through to oceanography and marine resource management, the course provides an almost unique mix of field work, laboratory-based practicals and lectures delivered by experienced industry experts and innovative research scientists.

You will also have the opportunity to develop a range of non-academic practical skills that are often considered to be essential for progression, these range from diving, snorkelling and powerboat handling through to aquatic husbandry, photography and marine mammal observation. The newly equipped laboratories not only provide an excellent teaching environment, but the aquaria and aquatic systems they contain include a diverse range of aquatic species ranging from corals and carp through to sharks and seahorses. There are also a number of residential and international field trips that enable you to gain practical skills and study in habitats that can vary from the sub-arctic through to coral reefs and mangroves.

PROFILE

Lauren Pestana Great White Shark Assistant

Falmouth Marine School gave me the chance to do some great field work in some really scientifically interesting areas. I got to move to the other side of the country and meet some new people, who were interested in the same things as me. My favourite part of my course had to be the investigative project, I love independent learning and I love sharks. So to have been given the resources and support to go out and collect specimens (dogfish sharks) and then keep them in the lab and look at behavioural responses and other investigations on them, was an excellent experience and something that I will take futher then my degree and far into my career.
