You’ll need:

A keen interest in general horticulture and enthusiasm to learn the principles in this area.

You’ll learn:

You will cover four core units:

  • Understanding garden features, plant selection and planning
  • Understanding the choice, establishment and maintenance of garden plants and lawns
  • Understanding the production of outdoor vegetables and fruit
  • Understanding protected environments and their use in plant cultivation

Expect:

to do research and an element of homework, probably one evening per week.

To achieve this Certificate you will need to pass one exam for each of the named subject areas for this qualification. The exam consists of short answer and long answer questions to test your knowledge.  It is possible to pass the course with a commendation, subject to achieving 70% or above in each exam.

the RHS course at Level 3, RHS practical at level 2, or become self-employed gardeners and work for other organisations in a gardening role, plus working in plant nurseries and garden centres.
