Incorporating the world-renowned City and Guilds Level 3 Advanced Diploma in Boatbuilding, our Boatbuilding, Restoration and Repair is a course full of challenge and reward.

As a Level 3 course, this diploma is all about preparing you for a future in the marine industry and perfecting your essential boatbuilding skills.

During the course you will spend a great deal of time in our dedicated boatbuilding workshops where you’ll hone your skills on live boat projects.

You’ll be learning from experienced professionals who are there to give you the very best start to your career and the time you will spend working on our live boat projects is invaluable to the development of your skill level and abilities.
You’ll be looking at all the aspects of boatbuilding, from simple re-finishing, repairs and restorations to new-build projects; you’ll undertake surveys, write reports, speak to customers, source and cost materials and labour charges etc.

Our workshop features industry-standard equipment, exactly like a working Boatyard. We have strong connections with local boatbuilding companies, and employers know a boatbuilding qualification from Falmouth Marine School means you have the very best skills of a crafts person.

So, if you dream of creating exotic boats with beautiful flowing curves and keeping traditional skills alive, then this is the best place to learn and develop the specific skill set required.

  What You Will Learn

This one-year advanced course will give you the knowledge and skills required to move directly into the marine industry as a Boatbuilder.

You will learn about the shape and designs of boats, the materials used in boat construction, the components and systems that go into traditional and modern vessels and the specific terminology used within the marine industry.

By learning in depth about the many elements that make up both wooden and composite boats, you will be well prepared for this challenging and highly skilled role.

  Entry Requirements

You will require a grade 4 in Maths and English Language, or a relevant Level 2 Qualification.

  Assessment

You will be assessed throughout the academic year via online multi-choice assessment tests, practical exercises, written assignments and exam papers.

  Progression

Upon completion of this course you’ll have a detailed understanding of boat construction and repair, as well as extensive knowledge of the various techniques required to undertake boatbuilding, restoration and repair tasks.

You’ll be ready to move directly into employment or self-employment as a boatbuilder, or you may even choose to follow other specialist roles such as Yacht Surveyor.

Alternatively, you may decide to progress to Higher Education and one of the many Marine focused degree courses that are available.
