There is a large practical component to the course and you will spend a great deal of time honing your skills on live projects in our dedicated boatbuilding workshops at the heart of Cornwall’s Marine Industry.

Throughout the course you’ll be looking at all aspects of boatbuilding, from simple re-finishing to new-build projects.

Please note: this course is also avaiable to 16-18 year olds who meet the entry requirements.

  What You Will Learn

This advanced one year course will give you the knowledge and skills required to move directly into the industry as a Boatbuilder.

You will learn about the shape and designs of boats, the materials used in boat construction, the components and systems that go into traditional and modern constructed vessels and the specific terminology used in the marine industry.

By learning in depth the many elements that make up both wooden and composite boats, you will be prepared for this challenging and highly skilled role

  Entry Requirements

You will require a Grade 4 in Maths and English Language, or a relevant Level 2 Qualification.


You will be assessed throughout the academic year via online multi-choice assessment tests, practical exercises, written assignments and exam papers.


Upon completion of this Level 3 course you will have an understanding of boat construction and repair, as well as extensive knowledge of the various techniques required to undertake boatbuilding tasks. As such you will be ready to move directly into employment as a Boatbuilder, or you may even choose to follow other specialist roles such as Yacht Surveyor.

Alternatively, you may decide to progress to Higher Education and one of the many Marine focused degree courses that are available.
