There is a large practical component to the course and you will spend a great deal of time honing your skills on live projects in our dedicated boatbuilding workshops at the heart of Cornwall’s Marine Industry.

Throughout the course you’ll be looking at all aspects of boatbuilding, from simple re-finishing to new-build projects.

Please note: this course is also avaiable to 16-18 year olds who meet the entry requirements.

  What You Will Learn

This advanced one year course will give you the knowledge and skills required to move directly into the industry as a Boatbuilder.

You will learn about the shape and designs of boats, the materials used in boat construction, the components and systems that go into traditional and modern constructed vessels and the specific terminology used in the marine industry.

By learning in depth the many elements that make up both wooden and composite boats, you will be prepared for this challenging and highly skilled role

  Entry Requirements

You will require a Grade 4 in Maths and English Language, or a relevant Level 2 Qualification.

  Assessment

You will be assessed throughout the academic year via online multi-choice assessment tests, practical exercises, written assignments and exam papers.

  Progression

Upon completion of this Level 3 course you will have an understanding of boat construction and repair, as well as extensive knowledge of the various techniques required to undertake boatbuilding tasks. As such you will be ready to move directly into employment as a Boatbuilder, or you may even choose to follow other specialist roles such as Yacht Surveyor.

Alternatively, you may decide to progress to Higher Education and one of the many Marine focused degree courses that are available.

Marine Engineering Diploma

Level 3 • Full-time • Falmouth Marine School


If the possibility of a career filled with challenges, job satisfaction and travel appeals you, then maybe you should consider studying to become a marine engineer. Our Level 3 Marine Engineering diploma is predominantly a practical programme, focused on giving learners the ability to diagnose, analyse and calibrate marine mechanical systems and components found on in board and outboard engines. Learning is focused around fault analysing, diagnosing, and servicing and maintaining of marine mechanical systems and components. Our workshop at Falmouth marine school is one of the largest marine specific training areas in the U.K, allowing leaners to utilise a wide variety of specialist tools to perform maintenance and diagnostic processes on our industry endorsed equipment. Choosing to study at Falmouth Marine School means that you will be joining a college with 100 years of training experience, whilst learning from our industry experts will give you the best start to your future career.

HNC/FdSc Operational Yacht Science

Level 4 • Full-time • Falmouth Marine School


This programme is designed for those who aspire to be the future crew, bosuns officers and captains of the superyacht sector. It is designed to run alongside relevant Royal Yachting Association (RYA) and Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) awards, to give deeper knowledge and understanding of the topics, and to give you more choice and an edge for your future career choices. It is run in partnership with UKSA in Cowes, Isle of Wight, as part of their Professional Yacht Cadetship. The cadetship requires a minimum of three years commitment to training, with phases of study on the Isle of Wight as well as periods of working onboard superyachts around the world. You will be required to make a Professional Yacht Cadetship application to UKSA, followed by a two day selection in Cowes, Isle of Wight. On successful completion of the one year HNC, you will gain direct entry onto the second year of the programme, allowing you to gain an FdSc Operational Yacht Science qualification. This programme does not follow the traditional academic year as it is designed around the superyacht season. It is studied in intensive blocks of time at UKSA and supported through Moodle (our virtual learning platform). There are additional costs for this programme to cover the cost of the Cadetship. You may be able to get help with this, contact us for more information. Time spent working on board yachts in between phases of study at UKSA are fully paid periods of employment. Earning on average €2,000 a month (Deckhand).
