Our class and the Serco apprentices had a trip out to Newquay airport, where we were able to see aircraft in person and have a better understanding of the aircraft world, if we had any questions all we had to do was ask and David or Paul would be to help us understand and clearly see how all parts are used inside and outside the aircraft." - George Besford Level 2 Aircraft Maintenance What our tutors say (blog extract): 'The last few weeks has seen some exciting additions to the practical side of our Aeronautical Engineering programme. Firstly, we took delivery of a Martin-Baker Mk2 ejection seat which saw service in a Canberra T22 aircraft. This seat is deactivated but is 95% complete and will see a full restoration courtesy of our Level 3 Aero students. This will help them gain experience with stripping, servicing and reassembling aircraft related mechanical components. The seat’s new home is our new Aero practical area that sits within the main Brunel workshops. This area contains many aircraft components that our students have already put to use this week by practicing their wire locking skills. Secondly, we have moved our Rolls Royce Viper turbo jet engine from its temporary home at Newquay Airport and it is now on display in the Brunel foyer. This engine was fitted to our Jet Provost aircraft which remains at Newquay. The students have already enjoyed looking over the engine and in time, they will be starting to strip and recondition various components from it. The engine will also help greatly in the teaching of jet propulsion theory. Finally, the Level 3 full-time and apprentice students spent a day at the Cornwall Aviation Heritage Centre at Newquay, touring the Centre and carrying out control cable maintenance tasks that are required for their PEOs. These tasks were carried out on the Centre’s Percival Pembroke aircraft. We hope to carry out more visits in the new year and strengthen the close relationship we already have formed with the Centre.' - Paul Case

MSc Land And Ecological Restoration

Level 7 • Full-time • Eden Project

Human activities are responsible for historical and ongoing damage to our planet and the services it performs for us. As the human population grows, so does the imperative not just to mitigate against further deterioration but to actively seek to restore and recover damaged and destroyed habitats to achieve environmental growth. MSc Land and Ecological Restoration aims to develop a holistic understanding of the process of restoring degraded sites and ecosystems. You will learn how to identify restoration priorities, engage stakeholders, plan, implement and monitor programmes of restoration, evaluate the success of activities, and plan aftercare. The course places a particular emphasis on ecological restoration as ‘the process of assisting the recovery of an ecosystem that has been degraded, damaged, or destroyed.’ You will develop a thorough understanding of the theoretical framework underpinning practical techniques together with the project management and employability competencies necessary to lead and contribute to restoration activities in the UK and abroad. The course is taught at Cornwall’s iconic Eden Project – a world-famous example of the successful restoration of post-industrial land, located within an area of active China clay extraction in the English county with the greatest proportion of ‘derelict’ land. You will have access to unique facilities at Eden – including Europe’s largest indoor rainforest, constructed soils, laboratories, teaching spaces, IT suite and learning centre and you will benefit from access to facilities at other Cornwall College campuses and at University of Plymouth. There is a large emphasis on fieldwork with visits to local restoration sites varying in scale from small nature reserves, through ongoing restoration by companies and government agencies, to large scale EU funded infrastructure projects that have transformed communities. During the course and subject to any travel restrictions you will also have the unique opportunity to visit a restoration project abroad. Working with our international partners and the global professional body for ecological restoration, you will meet local practitioners and academics, and contribute to ecological surveys and practical restoration work. With case studies and live employer briefs you will have ample opportunity to apply your learning and on graduation be well placed to progress to PhD research or enter an international labour market. Key principles and standards developed by professional bodies including the Society for Ecological Restoration (SER) and Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM) are embedded in the programme to prepare you for professional recognition.

Take a look at your smart phone, your tablet, your laptop, your computer. In your hand, under your fingers, is the final result of mathematical theory, engineering know-how, scientific understanding and technological inspiration. It is fused with design and art so it appeals to your sense of aesthetic and to your emotions. It allows you to be creative. So should a degree course. Single subject courses made sense in the twentieth century but in the twenty-first, life, employment, is a lot more complex and inter-disciplinary. Global problems require an ability to understand a range of subjects and combine them to propose global solutions. This is the case for conservation. Understanding the conservation science is one thing but explaining the issues and proposing the solutions to the general public is quite another. Most conservation science jobs require these skills: educators in zoos, aquariums and nature reserves, science journalists, wildlife media creators, wildlife guides, wildlife campaign managers, project coordinators, fundraisers for charities. The FdSc Wildlife Education and Media course does just that. It teaches you the zoological conservation science that makes you a conservation scientist but it also provides skills in educating a range of audiences, both in person and through a range of media. It is a theoretical course but it is also a practical and applied course: Pop-Up Nature Centres, British Science Week activity, interpretation development, storytelling, writing journalistic copy, producing films and podcasts. You don’t just learn but do. Employers like that and this is why this small course has been successful in getting graduates into jobs, especially if you complete the one-year top-up in BSc (Hons) Applied Zoology. You produce a portfolio to evidence your skills. You learn industry standard software. We guide you to become more employable. Other skills and knowledge you’ll gain include: • Learning subjects like ecology, zoology, biodiversity, evolution, animal behaviour and species/habitat conservation • Developing environmental interpretation for use by the public • Learning how to teach through running our dedicated pop-up nature centre • Planning and running an educational event for British Science Week • Learning how to use digital cameras for wildlife photography/film-making and industry-standard specialist software for media creation • Developing independent research skills in a second year project in conservation science, education and/or media. The course can be carried out on a full time basis, which is two years at our Newquay campus adjacent to Newquay Zoo, or on a part time basis over 3 or 4 years, where you will be infilled with full time students. During the course you will have the opportunity to visit various science communication centres and also to gain first-hand experience of teaching in the classroom. Overseas field work The college also organises trips further afield, at your own cost. These trips are a fantastic opportunity to learn new skills and practise your skills learnt at the college. They could also be considered highly valuable if you are looking to pursue a career in ecotourism, as a wildlife tour guide. Past trips have visited the forests of Borneo, the reefs of Egypt, nature reserves in Portugal and the beautiful island of Mull in the Inner Hebrides. More recently, we have run fantastic trips to the Kruger National Park in South Africa and to the cloud forests and coral reefs of Honduras. Both of these trips offer great opportunities for a wildlife educator or a wildlife media creator to practice what you have learned in the class room.

MSc Land And Ecological Restoration

Level 7 • Part-time • Eden Project
