Watersports Instructor Diploma

This is a unique course which is perfect for anyone who loves spending time outdoors and taking part in sports. The aim is to prepare students for a career in the watersports and wider outdoor industry. Students spend 75% of their time at Sithians Lake developing their personal and coaching skills in sailing, windsurfing, paddleboarding and kayaking. Students also have the opportunity to complete NGB qualifications to allow them to instruct a range of watersports such as RYA dinghy instructor, RYA windsurf instructor, Outdoor first aid, Powerboart Level 2, paddleboard instructor etc. (These additional courses may include a fee to cover the costs of certification and external trainers).

Marine Conservation Diploma

Offering a unique qualification within the sector, our Level 3 Marine Conservation Diploma will give you the opportunity to learn from experienced marine biology and conservation professionals as well as providing excellent opportunities for networking at our unique Industry Day. In the first year of the course you will have the opportunity to study 5 individual units which are heavily focused on Animal Welfare and Ethics. The focus of this area is to gain knowledge and skills that are fundamental to any role in the animal sector. These additional units will include visits to nationally recognised animal Sanctuaries and Zoos. You will have first-hand experience in monitoring the behaviour of animals in relation to captivity, rehabilitation and their natural habitat. You will investigate factors that affect animal health and which cover a range of influencing factors affecting growth and reproduction. Within our established Aquaria at Falmouth Marine School you will gain hands on experience of ensuring the health and welfare of our species and the systems that support them. This experience will support you in securing a work experience placement in any national Aquarium or a conservation industry of your choice. Embedded within the course there will be opportunities to conduct rocky shore surveys as well as pelagic surveys on a vessel in the Fal Estuary and should your passion lead you directly into the ocean environment, there is an additional opportunity for you to undertake a PADI diving qualification.

This programme allows you to gain an understanding of the science underlying marine conservation; whilst our location on the beautiful wild coast of north Cornwall enables you to study a wide variety of aquatic habitats and marine wildlife at first hand. Designed in close consultation with the marine industry, this exciting and vibrant programme is highly relevant if you would like a career in the expanding field of marine biology and conservation. The first year will give you a firm grounding in aquatic ecology, marine and biological science, as well as developing practical survey skills. In the second year there are more specialised modules covering topics such as fish ecology and marine invertebrates. There is a large element of work-related learning integrated within the programme and you will have the opportunity to talk to many experts in the field and visit professional institutions; we have strong links with commercial partners Blue Reef Aquarium, the National Lobster Hatchery and Cornwall Wildlife Trust. Marine Conservation in Practice develops skills in stakeholder engagement and outreach activities. It also incorporates the requirement to gain 100 hours of relevant work-based experience. This course is also available with Science Gateway, perfect for you if you would like to study any of the science-based Foundation Degrees (FdSc) we offer, but don’t have the right qualifications or grades to do so.
