Nursing Access to HE Diploma

Bicton College | Cornwall College Saltash | Bicton LEVEL: 3 Social Care & Health

The Access to Nursing programme is designed as a stepping stone to enable motivated, enthusiastic people to progress on to a range of health and social care related Higher Education degree programmes. Validated by Ascentis, this is a recognised qualification for progression by universities.

The course is challenging and you will in effect be studying the equivalent of 3 A levels in 9 months as opposed to 2 years. Therefore full attendance and absolute commitment is required to allow you to fully maximise your learning opportunities.   If you are a proactive individual who is determined to realise their potential as a professional in the health care sector, then this pathway is for you.

Ideal if:

You wish to professionalise your existing employment through accessing a degree pathway or you have always wanted to work in the health and social care sector.

You’ll need:

Although there aren't any specific entry requirements, all applicants will be invited to attend an access workshop (approx 3 hours) where full course information is given and you will be expected to complete the initial assessment and a written exercise.

Most healthcare based university degrees now stipulate that all applicants need to have at least a C grade in English and maths, therefore priority will be given to applicants who already meet these entry requirements.

On occasion, the Access and GCSE teams may allow applicants to sit one of the GCSE’s alongside the Access programme, but this will be at the discretion of the Course Managers.

If an applicant does not have either GCSE, it is highly recommended that they apply to Cornwall College GCSE faculty to achieve these prior to submitting an application for an Access course.  You may, however, be interested in sitting these alongside our Level 2 Diploma course.

You’ll learn:

This course will support your academic development through 5 Study Skills modules including:

  • Developing Your Research Skills
  • Academic Writing
  • Examination Techniques and Practices

You will also study a range of academic modules from the Social Sciences, such as:

  • Sociology
  • Psychology
  • Health Promotion
  • Social Policy
  • 6 Biology modules

In total you will study 20 modules over the 9 month course. The pathway has been designed to reflect undergraduate programmes to fully prepare you for university.

Expect:

The course runs from September until the end of June/early July, 2 days per week. The course may also run 2 evenings and 1 day per week (subject to course numbers).

This is a challenging course and it is expected that students will complete a minimum of 15 hours of independent study each week. Students may access college facilities on the days that they are not taught with some evening study available.

Please also be advised that most universities require work experience to complement your UCAS application-therefore it is highly recommended that you are working within the health care sector in either a voluntary or paid capacity.
