Access courses are designed as a stepping stone to enable motivated, enthusiastic people to progress on to Higher Education. This is ideal for those who want to re-train or re-direct their lives into Health professions such as: Chiropodists/podiatrists;Dietitians; Occupational therapists; orthoptists; orthotists; Paramedics; Physiotherapists; Prosthetists; Radiographers; Speech and language therapists; as well as Sports Science professions and many other science related careers. There is a very high level of academic and personal support throughout the course, which can help if you need to combine study with part-time employment and family commitments.

We also support you through the university application process with tutorials. These are designed to offer guidance and support throughout the learning process.

Ideal if:

You want to study a wide range of health related subjects including; Human Movement, Core Chemistry, Homeostasis, Health Physics, Physics for Health Professionals, Calculus, Statistics, Formula Equation in the Mole, Enzymes and Nucleaic Acids, Biological Molecules as well as Role of the Professional, Placement and Study Skills.

You’ll need:

All applicants will be invited to attend a workshop where you will find out about how Access to HE courses are structured and during which you will you will undertake the College initial assessment to assess your suitablility to study at this level. This will be followed by an  interview where full course information is given and you will be expected to complete an Initial Assessment

Applicants who do not hold a GCSE in mathematics or English at grade C or above will be expected to gain these qualifications before or alongside their Access studies. The opportunity to achieve these qualifications will be provided.

You’ll learn:

By studying a range of modules on a range of subjects, you will study a range of units at Level 3 (equivalent to A-level). Each unit is worth 3 credits. For successful completion of the access course you will need 60 credits overall. The 60 credits are made up of 45 credits from academic subject subject areas and 15 credits from academic preparation units, which are designed to prepare you for academic study at university level.


To attend college, three days per week from 9.00am until 4.30pm over 35 weeks. If you already have GCSEs in English and Maths (C grade or higher) then you will attend from 10.30am-3.00pm on two if these days.

An Allied Health Professions Access to HE Diploma course is a suitable entrance qualification for the many health science based degrees in Plymouth, Cornwall and throughout the country. It is also a recognised qualification that can help you gain entry into the workplace.

Several of our students progress to the University of Plymouth, other universities across the country or have continued their studies at Cornwall College, selecting courses from within with our range of foundation degrees. These include programmes at our Cornwall College Camborne, Newquay and St Austell campuses, as well as Falmouth Marine School and Duchy College.
