The purpose of this qualification is to develop your practical skills to a high level of occupational ability to enable you to perform your own barber services and you will be hands-on from the first week. Learning in purpose-built salons, you will be training in a dynamic and commercial environment.

managing or owning their own salons.

You wish to pursue a career in the barbering industry.
You will need to have a minimum of two GCSEs at grades 4 – 9 in English and mathematics or an equivalent qualification.
At Cornwall College, we recognize that applicants without these qualifications can often offer a high level of competence as well as life experience and we will therefore consider all applications on their merits alongside their qualifications.
If you are 16-19 without the required grades, you will be required to continue to develop Maths, English and Employability skills as a part of your study programme.

This qualification that has been specifically designed to develop your practical skills in:
- cutting men's hair
- the specialist work of cutting facial hair
- how to provide effective shampooing and conditioning or styling services
- how to offer a good consultation service for clients.
As well as the practical knowledge that you will gain from working on the job, our team of industry trained professionals will guide you through the theory offering their advice and demonstrating techniques.
Students on this course will also have the opportunity to work on reception, enhancing their work-based skills in customer service, product promotion and retail sales.
Assessments are carried out during practical lessons along with some online testing.
You will be hands-on from the first week. Learning in purpose-built salons, you will be training in a dynamic and commercial environment.

Cornwall College offers the complete pathway in Barbering and you could take your qualifications further by progressing on to the barbering diploma level 3 or the hairdressing diploma level 3. Past students have gone on to managing their own business, travel on cruise liners and to teach.

Dan Blackwell Barber Clique
After 11 years working in industry, Dan decided on a career change and joined the Barbering Diploma Level 2. During his studies the head barber of Clique came into the College to do a demonstration, he saw the way Dan cut hair and told him to speak to the owners about getting a job. Dan did just that and is now one of their in-house barbers.
"I love cutting hair, meeting new people and hearing their stories. It doesn’t feel like work it feels like I just hang out and cut hair. My most memorable moment at college was the first practical. I was so nervous but the tutors supported me throughout.”
