Pathway 2 Employment to Become Work Ready – Stage 1

This department focuses on building your confidence in learning, employability and independent living with all programmes tailored to each individual learner, with effective teaching that involves providing each student with different avenues to learning, often in the same classroom. We have dedicated foundation learning areas and experienced tutors who will help you reach your full potential.

We offer courses for a wide range of learners; from those needing some extra support, those with learning difficulties, or those who simply want to spend some time developing core skills. Our courses are designed to focus on developing skills that can be used in any vocational area and enable you to try out numerous career paths before committing to a specific vocational course.

If you are not quite ready to enter the world of work, but would like to develop your employability skills this course is ideal. You will learn core employability skills through activities that develop your communication and teamwork. You will also improve your English and maths. You should expect to carry out one day supported community action, or one day supported college work placement per week. On completion of your course you could go on to a traineeship, voluntary or supported paid employment or a supported internship.

This stage 1 course runs for 3 days per week and includes 2 days per week in college studying a City & Guilds qualification in Employability Skills, ICT, English and maths and 1 day per week engaging in a supported community action project or in a college-based work placement.

Ideal if:

You want your next step to be into the world of work, but you are not yet ready to undertake a work placement.

You’ll need:

To access this course you will need to have evidence of additional learning needs such as an EHC Plan. You will complete initial assessments to establish if you are suitable for the course and what level of study may be suitable for you.

You’ll learn:

Core employability skills through activities that develop your communication and team work. You will also improve you English and mathematics.

  • Employability skills – including CV writing, interview practice, practice completing job application forms and sending emails. In addition you will study City & Guilds Employability skills at either Entry Level 3 or Level 1.
  • ICT skills will be enhanced including practice using online job searches, online application forms and working with email.
  • Vocational options could be available to enhance your employability skills as well as access to internal work placements.
  • You may engage in an enterprise projects which will involve learning about budgeting, making profit etc. and setting up a micro business.
  • Maths & English – You will study maths and English at a level appropriate to you. These skills are studied in discrete sessions as well as being embedded throughout the whole curriculum.

Expect:

On the Pathway to Employment Stage 1 programme you will be working towards the City & Guilds E3/L1 Employability Skills qualification as well as being assessed based on an individually tailored RARPA (Recognising and Recording Progress & Achievement) programme (Developing Skills for the Workplace) that focusses on individual targets and goals which are linked to outcomes set within and Education, Health and Care Plan as well as your individual goals and aspirations.  Throughout the year your targets will be regularly reviewed and a portfolio of your learning will be produced.

Ruth Dixcee Team Lead Foundation Learning

Ruth has worked in education for over 15 years where she worked for Cornwall Learning delivering training to school teaching and support staff who worked with young people with additional needs. Ruth works with her team at the College to constantly develop courses which are rich and varied.
"I am passionate about giving learners with additional needs the best possible preparation for the world of work or, if more appropriate, equipping them with the necessary skills to live as independent a life as possible. Our courses help them to achieve these outcomes in a safe, friendly, happy and productive environment.”
