This Level 3 diploma is a full-time program, suitable for people who wish to become engineers or technicians within the aeronautical or service community around the world. It can also be a great starting point for those who perhaps would like a flying career.
Aircraft engineering is concerned with the design, manufacturing and maintenance of flying machines of all shapes and sizes. With lives at risk this is one of the most challenging and diverse industries in the world and with aerospace high on the agenda for Cornwall’s economic growth and prosperity, as seen in the investment in the Aero Hub at Newquay, we have a plane on campus for you to practice your skills on.
It will give you a sound basis to move onto further education at university level or provide employment opportunities that might include Aeronautical engineering in any of the armed forces, working as an aircraft technician in the civil aircraft industry or progressing on to become a European Safety Agency JAR 66 licensed aircraft engineer. Although, many skills and knowledge from this course may be recognized by many other engineering disciplines.

You wish to become an engineer or technician within the aeronautical or service community.
You will normally need to have at least one of the following:
- Four GCSEs at grade 4 or above including English, maths and science
- City & Guilds Level 2 Certificate in Aeronautical Engineering
- an intermediate GNVQ in a related subject (Merit is desirable)
The BTEC Extended Diploma requires the completion of 16 units of study. The program comprises four core units. The course does cover some practical work in airframe repairs and the removal inspection repair and installation of components. Covering in detail many of the systems installed in today's aircraft, big and small.
The course also looks at legislation, documentation, human factors related to aviation but at the same time many of the individual topics are transferrable skills that are recognized by other engineering disciplines.

We work with the Cornish Aviation Heritage Centre and the Royal Aeronautical Association and offer field trips to get real hands-on experience of what it’s like to work at airports and carry out engineering duties.
University study such as our FdSc Engineering also this route provides suitable UCAS entry tariff points to access an engineering degree at UK universities.
You will also have a sound basis should you wish to go into employment as an engineer or technician within the aeronautical or service community around the world. You may also wish to progress to aeronautical engineering in the armed forces, or to become a European Safety Agency licensed aircraft engineer.

John Goodwin Course Manager - Aeronautical Engineering
John is an expert in aeronautics, he has sent 27 years in the aeronautical engineering sector, first with the Royal Air Force and then supporting the RAF Search and Rescue Force at RAF St Mawgan. John has also worked as a project engineer in the private aerospace sector and as an aviation contractor. In 2014 he joined Cornwall College as a consultant to develop new specialist aeronautical engineering qualifications, which he now teaches.
