The FdSc Heritage and Botanical Collections (FdSc HBC) acknowledges zoological gardens as an important horticulture programme. This programme is designed to develop high-level skills in heritage and botanic narratives and interpretations where public education is an essential component.
The programme will be situated in an English Heritage-registered Grade 1 Landscape of Special Historic Interest, which forms an integral part of the physical infrastructure of the Bicton College campus. Students have access to the £3.6m Animal Centre at Bicton College which houses 250 species of animals, plus the resources at Paignton Zoo to help them to develop practical skills in zoological gardens. Several modules will be co-taught with FdSc Conservation and Countryside Management, FdSc Estate and Farm Enterprise Management and FdSc Animal Science programmes. Students on the FdSc HBC will, therefore, be able to gain knowledge in a wider context and applications. The management of habitats for animals, resource management and business planning is part of the provision alongside operational practical work.
The programme is linked to other available facilities within The Cornwall College Group (TCCG) such as the Micropropagation Unit at Rosewarne campus in West Cornwall and resources at both the Eden Project Learning and its sister project, The Lost Gardens of Heligan particularly during work placement.
Students enrolled in this programme will also be part of the wider horticulture student community based at Eden Project Learning.
